Newcomers Network North Canterbury – a great idea!
6 June 2007

Newcomers Network North Canterbury is an initiative of North Canterbury Neighbourhood Support, designed to strengthen links with new community members. It has been running for almost three years and already has 76 members in the "Classic" 50 up age group, and 52 members in the "Oilers" 30-40 age group, some coming from other parts of New Zealand and others from overseas.

Thanks to Ray White Real Estate's generous sponsorship, Newcomers Network is able to offer friendship and support through various activities and get-togethers. The group meet every Thursday morning at The War Memorial Hall in Rangiora at 10.30 to greet other newcomers, share ideas and experiences and start new friendships.

The group also organise outings and activities such as evening visits to Citizens Advice, the police station, local Council, museum or library to learn about services in the district.

A lunch is arranged every month and also a dinner. Quiz nights, ten pin bowling and many other activities also help foster friendship.

A monthly newsletter and calendar are put out to keep people in touch.

This initiative is based on a community development model and originally came from Ashburton. Timaru also has an established newcomers network.
