International Year of Volunteers 10th anniversary IYV+10

31 December 2010 - 1 January 2011

Organisation: International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE)

Locations: International

Description: 2011 is the 10th anniversary of the United Nation's International Year of Volunteers held in 2001. As it did in 2001, the International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) is preparing to give leadership to the non-governmental volunteer community in celebrating this global recognition of volunteering.

The UN International Year of Volunteers in 2001 was a remarkable success because it was embraced by the global volunteering community. That enthusiasm helped promote new developments and partnerships in volunteering; it strengthened the status of volunteering; and it helped make IYV a truly worldwide celebration.

The 10th anniversary of IYV in 2011 will be a chance to re-energise those efforts. We need you to make it happen.

We are calling on you to sign on as a supporter of IYV+10 and to invite your colleagues and partners to do likewise. The more people sign on, the more who will be helping make IYV+10 a success.

Mark and celebrate IYV+10 in your community/school/organization. Join other collaborations to spread the influence of IYV+10.

Find out more about planning on the IAVE website and see some of the suggested ideas to celebrate: http://www.iave.org/

White Ribbon Day

25 November 2010

Organisation: Families Commission

Location: National

Description: White Ribbon Day is the international day when people wear a white ribbon to show that they do not condone violence towards women.

It was started by a men’s movement in Canada in 1991 and has been officially adopted by the United Nations as its International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The campaign was introduced to New Zealand by UNIFEM (the United Nations Development Fund for Women).

In this country most violence by men against women takes place in the home – with an average of 14 women a year killed by their partners or ex-partners. Each year there are over 3,500 convictions recorded against men for assaults on women and one in five women will experience sexual assault or sexual interference at some point in their lives.

White Ribbon Day celebrates the many men willing to show leadership and commitment to promoting safe, healthy relationships within families and encourages men to challenge each other on attitudes and behaviour that are abusive.

International Volunteer Managers Day

5 November 2010

Organisation: International Volunteer Managers Day (IVMDay)

Location: International

Description: Universally, people recognise the contribution of volunteers - in sport, health, emergency services, faith communities and the environmental lobby... in fact, volunteers are involved in just about every aspect of service delivery in all walks of life.

However, volunteering does not succeed in a vacuum. Behind this army of volunteers lies an equally dedicated group of individuals and agencies who are reponsible for the coordination, support, training, administration and recruitment of the world's volunteers - skilled professionals who are adept at taking singular passion and turning it into effective action.

That is why we celebrate International Volunteer Managers Day every year on 5 November.

It is important to let those professionals know that the spirit of volunteerism is enhanced and enabled by them, and to thank them.

We urge you to mark your calendar and, whether you are an administrator, a volunteer, a community leader or someone who receives the benefit of volunteer help, to make sure the people who act as leaders and catalysts get the recognition they deserve!

Christchurch Neighbourhood Week

30 October - 7 November 2010

Neighbourhood Week is a week dedicated to getting to know the people who live close to you. It’s about bringing people together – whether it’s a small get together of a few households or a larger neighbourhood gathering. Children sharing lollies.

The week is an ideal opportunity to introduce yourself to your neighbours. Getting to know your neighbours can make the difference between merely occupying an address and living in a neighbourhood of friends.

Who are my neighbours?

A neighbourhood could also be a small group of families at a local kindergarten, kohanga reo or school who share a common desire to build a strong community with each other. Neighbourhood Week is a festival that celebrates the unique and diverse flavour that is characteristic of each individual neighbourhood.

How did Neighbourhood Week start?

Neighbourhood Week is the brainchild of the Shirley-Papanui Community Board, which held the first event in 1998.

Each year, it has grown to the point that it is now being promoted annually by the Christchurch City Council and nationwide by Neighbourhood Support. The Christchurch Neighbourhood Week Team works closely with Neighbourhood Support.

Who supports Neighbourhood Week?

The success of Neighbourhood Week in Christchurch relies on support from the Christchurch City Council Community Boards, and Neighbourhood Support.

Explore this section to find out what you can do to make your neighbourhood a more amenable and fun place to belong to.
