Marton's James Cook School is the eighth school in the Rangitikei-Whanganui region to join the Junior Neighbourhood Support programme. Te Kura O Ratana is the ninth.

Whanganui-based programme co-ordinator Janet Worfolk said lower decile schools were invited to participate in the programme where children work with one another to promote positive behaviour and self-respect.

The virtues are: respect, inclusion, co-operation, honesty, endeavour and resolution (RICHER).

The programme works with as many people in the community as possible including the police, Civil Defence, fire service, shop owners, neighbours and the school's parents. "We've even got some funding from the Rangitikei District Council," Miss Worfolk said.

Each term the participating pupils are assessed to see how much they have improved and then the school staff decide which pupils have made the most impact through their behaviour and attitude.

During an assembly where all the agencies attend, pupils receive framed certificates.

"At the end of the year, the children who are the best model citizens get a Big Day Out," Miss Worfolk said. Last year, pupils went on a trip to Wellington Zoo.

James Cook School principal Michelle Cameron has gone into the wider Marton community where children are likely to go to ask people to be a part of a good behaviour coupon programme.

So far 11 pupils have received coupons for showing positive behaviour in Marton shops and facilities.
