Love thy neighbours

Ashburton Guardian

I love my neighbours," says Deborah Jones, which is a fine sentiment to have for a Neighbourhood Support street co-ordinator.

All it takes is a knock on the door and a chat, she says.

"There are 20 households that I go along to and gain information for neighbourhood support, so that everyone knows who they are, their next of kin."

Mrs Jones thinks knowing each other is fundamental to calling ourselves a society.

"It's community – it's what people need to know. We need to know our neighbour in this day and age."

Everybody wants to be involved.

"We had some new residents from Christchurch. I'll go and welcome them with a bottle of wine and that's it."

And it's those difficult or different situations that usually bring out the best in people to talk, share and help each other through.

"I really enjoy it. When it snows, being friendly. If you hear a bang or a noise, tell me."
