Spirit of Rotorua awards announcedDaily Post
The group was stunned as it was announced the winner before more than 200 people at a ceremony in the Rotorua District Council Chambers last night. Pauline Evans, the acting chairwoman of Rotorua Neighbourhood Support, said the award acknowledged the work of more than 580 volunteers who supported the group. "We listened to what the people needed and they felt listened to and supported," she said. "Overall it's about ensuring our community is safe for everyone." The group was so successful because of partnerships with community groups such as police and the Rotorua District Council, Mrs Evans said. TrustPower Community Relations Representative Suzi Luff said the group knew that to have a safer community, the community needed to be responsible for creating it. "Neighbourhood Support Rotorua empowers the whole community through its establishment of small neighbourhood support groups for streets and businesses. "These small networks encourage interaction between neighbours, who then keep each other safe," she said. Neighbourhood Support Rotorua has 527 groups, encompassing 8000 homes and about 500 motels and businesses. About 80 per cent of crime committed in Rotorua is happening in non-Neighbourhood Support areas.
