FROM THE DESK OF NEIGHBOURHOOD SUPPORT NATIONAL MANAGER, INGRID STONHILL

WELCOME

Kia Ora and welcome to the 5th edition of Bulletin Board. This Bulletin Board is designed to give you a brief update of how things are progressing with Neighbourhood Support throughout the country. So I welcome your feedback!

Funding Announcement by Hon Min Burton

The Minister of Justice, the Hon Mark Burton announced in the House last week the very good news that Neighbourhood Support NZ, is to receive a third year's funding from the Government. This money will be used for national co-ordination. NSNZ will be working towards a business case bid to the Government's budget round for on-going future funding from 2008.

National Community Policing Group Up-date

Approval has been given for the appointment of the majority of the second 'tranche' of community constables for the 2007/2008 year. You can expect that they will be appointed over the next few months. The new position description for both community constables and community supervisors has been consulted and is with Police Human Resources awaiting final approval.

Supt Bill Searle, Rachael Bambery and myself attended a briefing with Min of Police Annette King. The briefing was to bring the Minister up to date with Community Policing and Neighbourhood Support. The Minister remains very supportive.

NSNZ AGM Levin

Congratulations must go to Wendy Foreman and the Levin team for hosting such a successful training day and AGM. We received many examples of excellent community crime prevention work being carried out across the Tasman. It was also an excellent opportunity to hear about our community policing work on an international scale and how that relates to the work we do within Neighbourhood Support at the grass roots level. I wish to extend a thank you also to, Darren Hughes, MP, for Otaki who look time out of his busy schedule to come and address the meeting.

I would also like to take the opportunity of congratulating and welcoming the new NSNZ Board. You will be represented over the next year by Joy Johnson, Chair, Shelly Henderson, Treasurer, Jan Maunder, Secretary, Delegates and Deputies: Les Birch, Graeme Smith, Karen Little, Lyall Duffus, Jo-Anne Hartley, Wendy Foreman, Paul Miller, Barrie Fenton, John Jefferies, Kim MacDonald, Don Boyd, Karen Ave, Denise Langrish (TBC) Len Hill (TBC).

Copies of the presentations and photographs will be available on disc within the next few weeks.

Australasian Neighbourhood Watch/Support Advisory Board

The success of jointly hosting (NZP/NSNZ) our first ever Australasian Advisory Board meeting was certainly expressed in the smiles and warm congratulations offered by our visitors from across the Tasman. It was a truly successful event in many ways. We have strengthened our working relationship with other like minded agencies; we have learnt some new techniques of engagement; and we have reiterated our common goal of building safer communities together in our own territories and across both countries. We look forward to working effectively over the next year.

Patron Continues

It is with great warmth that we welcome again Paul Fitzharris as our Patron of NSNZ. Paul is a tireless worker for NSNZ and never misses an opportunity to act as an ambassador for the great work done by some many wonderful volunteers. We look forward to working with you again over the next couple of years Paul!

Neighbourhood Support/Ready net Database

Congratulations to Readynet! Who on Thursday 20th September were awarded the Microsoft NZ Citizenship Award for their work on READYNET.

Readynet will be commencing the roll out of the NSNZ database system in Napier and the Hutt later this month.

Graffitti Paul Miller

Congratulations to Paul Miller for an excellent article in the local paper Hawkes Bay Today; Paul emphasized the importance of fighting graffiti by staying on top of the problem and the role of NS. If you are experiencing difficulties or need some support in combating your graffiti issues then Paul would welcome hearing from you. (Napier NS)

Welcome to the NS Family

Welcome to the Community Renewal Project team in Glen Innes Auckland! It is great to see Neighbourhood Support groups being established within the Housing New Zealand communities. We hope to be able to build on the wonderful work you are doing!

Community Patrols New Zealand

It was wonderful to see CPNZ Chair Ian Pilbrow attend our AGM and training day. We are looking forward to having a closer working relationship with CPNZ and hope to be holding a joint training seminar next year! We will keep you posted.

Local Government Elections

With the Local Government Elections now over make sure you make contact with your newly elected representatives and extend them a very warm and neighbourly welcome to office. Working with your local Council is very important, so please make sure you establish a good working relationship!

Next Board Meeting

The next NSNZ Board meeting will be held on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st November, at the NZ Police College.
